By Jeff Chew

BRINNON -- When it comes to popular events, this two-day festival is anything but shrimpy.

The annual Brinnon ShrimpFest -- which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday -- lured upward of 9,000 people last year, and that was with the Hood Canal Bridge closed for construction, said vendor organizer Debbie Williams.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the event that has been around since 1994 will open another Memorial Day weekend with Hood Canal spot shrimp on sale.

The fresh and tasty tails are expected to be gone before noon.

"I know we cleaned and processed about 1,200 pounds of shrimp," Williams said.

"We have about 700 containers to sell, a little less than last year, but it's the same price."

That's $10 a bag.

Once that runs out, containers of Taylor Shellfish Co. shrimp will be sold.

The event -- which is on the grassy part of Dosewallips State Park in Brinnon, east of U.S. Highway 101 and north of the Dosewallips River -- has grown popular with vendors, too, with up to 30 turned away this year for lack of space.

"We were full with 100 vendors in two months," Williams said.

Eleven vendors will offer food. The rest will sell arts and crafts.

Belt-sander races

Popular souped-up belt-sander races will heat up at 1 p.m. each day, with more than 20 entries from the region and Canada expected to zip in for the show.

The stage will light up with local music and entertainment and a Veterans of Foreign Wars beer garden will be featured for adults. There are pony rides and other fun for kids.

The tides are usually low enough during the weekend for easy harvest of clams and oysters on the public beaches at Dosewallips State Park near the festival (state Fish and Wildlife shellfish license required) and the weather is traditionally good, Williams said.

Williams said ShrimpFest T-shirts, mugs and shrimp necklaces go fast, too.

The festival is busiest on Saturday until 2 p.m., Williams said, with traffic sometimes backing up on U.S. Highway 101 and people having to park outside the state parkland lot and walking in.

Flaggers on the highway help guide traffic into the festival parking area.

A pancake breakfast is planned at 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Brinnon Community Center on Highway 101.

Proceeds from ShrimpFest 2009 will be donated to community projects.

Over the years, the proceeds have benefited the community through donations to the Brinnon School and the Brinnon Volunteer Ambulance & Firefighters Association, Brinnon and Quilcene community centers as well as many other projects.

Anglers can fish for free June 12-13

OLYMPIA - Each year, thousands of Washingtonians go fishing - legally - without a license. How? By taking advantage of Free Fishing Weekend, scheduled June 12-13.

During those two days, no license will be required to fish or gather shellfish in any waters open to fishing in Washington state. Also, no vehicle use permit will be required during Free Fishing Weekend to park at any of the 600 water-access sites maintained by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

In addition, anglers will not need a Two Pole Endorsement to fish with two poles on thousands of lakes statewide, nor will they need a Columbia River Salmon and Steelhead Endorsement, otherwise required to fish for salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River and its tributaries.

"Free Fishing Weekend is a great time to revive an old hobby or to introduce friends and family to fishing," said Craig Burley, fish division manager for WDFW. "Adults can introduce kids to fishing on a wide variety of waters around the state."

Anglers have been catching daily limits of trout at lakes for the past month, and many rivers will open to trout fishing June 5 throughout the state. Other options available on Free Fishing Weekend include:

Hatchery chinook salmon in Washington's ocean waters.

Lingcod on the coast and Puget Sound.

Bass, crappie, perch and other warmwater fish biting in lakes throughout eastern Washington.

Shad and sturgeon on the Columbia River.

Spring chinook salmon on tributaries to the lower Columbia River.

Hatchery steelhead on the mainstem Columbia River and on rivers on the Olympic Peninsula.

While no licenses are required on Free Fishing Weekend, other rules such as size limits, bag limits and closures will still be in effect. Anglers will also be required to complete a catch record card for any salmon, steelhead or sturgeon they catch.

Catch record cards and Fishing in Washington 2010/2011 sportfishing rules pamphlets are available free at hundreds of sporting goods stores and other license dealers throughout the state. See http://wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/vendors/ on the WDFW website to locate a license dealer.

By Patrick J. Sullivan of the Leader

The goal of most shrimpers who launched their boats at the Herb Beck Marina in Quilcene last Saturday: get a limit, and get out of the water before low tide made even getting back into the small harbor a challenge.

The recreational shrimping season in Hood Canal continues from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, May 5, May 8 and May 12. A fifth day may be added depending on harvest quota.

The Discovery Bay Shrimp District and Port Townsend Bay are open at least one more day, May 5, and maybe more depending on harvest quotas, reported the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Shrimpers launching out of Quilcene May 1 generally felt there were fewer boats in nearby waters than in some years, perhaps because Discovery Bay reopened to shrimping this year, and also because the halibut season opened May 1.

The morning weather was decent, and it seemed most shrimpers were having plenty of success. The best shrimp bait: cat food, of course.

"We limited out and got out before the low tide, which makes the world wonderful," said Ted Dedman of Camas, who came to the Olympic Peninsula to go shrimping with his buddy Gary Wheeler of Diamond Point. They will go out every day of the season, and a fair share of the shrimp they catch become delicacies to share around their Arizona RV park this coming winter.

Mike Shurts of Silverdale was part of a large group, with everyone pulling their daily limit of 80 shrimp in just a few pulls. His group was well aware of the low tide - a minus two at 1:30 p.m. - and Shurts was among those with pickups lined up to haul boats up the marina's steep ramp.

"This ramp, even with the low tide today, is the best ramp on Hood Canal," Shurts said, joking with friends to use his Ford F-250 truck in case their Chevrolets could not handle the ramp.

Winter storms blow hard off the bay at the marina's mouth, piling up the sand. The Port of Port Townsend intends to dredge the marina's mouth this summer - an overdue job, boaters said.

At about 12:30 p.m., there was only six inches of water at the marina's entrance. Boaters who couldn't make it back in had to wait outside the marina for the tide to rise. "We saw [the bottom] on the depth sounder going out, and could actually see it coming in," said Mark Page of Port Orchard.

Still, shrimpers did a good job navigating the steep boat ramp without mishap said Jim Speer, marina operator.

"Last year we had two trucks sink," Speer said, and in his 13 shrimp seasons he's seen pickups tip over after backing off the concrete ramp into the mud. "Everything's pretty smooth this year."

Check out our fabulous fjord

Surrounded by the emerald green of majestic forests, the communities of Quilcene and Brinnon are located along the north end of Hood Canal, Washington's only fjord.

Hood Canal towns are famous for quiet rural living and outdoor activities such as hiking and boating. Fresh shellfish are also a big attraction. Oysters from Quilcene and Dabob bays are shipped to the finest restaurants throughout world.

Three rivers tumble out of the Olympic Mountains in South Jefferson County, pouring through a landscape of towering firs and beautiful meadows. The Big Quilcene, the Dosewallips and the Duckabush empty into the salt water of Hood Canal and offer numerous recreational opportunities.

The U.S. Forest Service's Quilcene Ranger Station is where visitors can get information about the Olympic Mountains, fishing, hiking, viewpoints, backpacking and where to cut your own Christmas tree.

Brinnon's ShrimpFest is the flavorful May event for the Emerald Towns, while Quilcene celebrates its Heritage Days in April.

Elwell P. Brinnon built the first homestead along the Duckabush River about six miles south of present-day Brinnon. Later he moved his wife, a sister to S'Klallam Indian Chief Chetzemoka, to the present site of Brinnon along the Dosewallips River.

While Brinnon remained a small community, Quilcene city leaders hoped their town might grow into a major port during the 1890s, when Port Townsend speculators began building a railroad to Olympia and on to Portland. Quilcene would have been its first major stop, but extending the line across 2,730-foot Mount Walker just south of town proved too costly and brought railroad plans to an end.

In the next century, Quilcene's town leaders turned their aspirations to mining, but the Tubal Cain Copper and Manganese Mining Co. never hit a big enough payload to compensate for the inaccessibility of the sites. The mines closed in the 1920s.

Logging is the only trade that sustained both communities until the latter part of the 20th century.

Destinations

Quilcene National Fish Hatchery: Open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the hatchery is located two miles south of Quilcene along Highway 101. The hatchery raises three of the five species of Pacific salmon - chinook chum and silver salmon. For more information, call 360-765-3334.

Mount Walker Viewpoint: Puget Sound and mountain scenery stretches out before visitors to the Mount Walker viewpoint after ascending a 3.1-mile, fairly steep gravel road or a two-mile hike. If you drive to the top, leave your travel trailer behind.

Pleasant Harbor: On the county's southern edge, the marina offers great facilities for boaters and travelers. Just south is the public boat launch at Triton Cove.

Dosewallips State Park: For hiking and camping enthusiasts, enjoy the park and its many offerings.

Other attractions: Take a day trip to Whitney Gardens in Brinnon, or try a visit to Rocky Brook Falls about three miles from Highway 101 on Dosewallips River Road.

Shrimpfest planning is underway so that means it's time to plan a springtime or summer getaway.

May is shrimp season, not sure of the dates yet, but Shrimpfest is Memorial Day weekend. It's great fun for all with lots of vendors, music and beltsander races. Yes, beltsander races....they are a hoot!!

Emerald Towns Alliance, non profit organization, puts on Shrimpfest donating proceeds going back into the communities of Brinnon & Quilcene. Check out their website at www.emeraldtowns.org.

Our summer weekly rates start May 15. Some houses will be offered by the week, and some will be two night minimum. We will have specials selling any open weekends or week days. So plan your vacation on Hood Canal today. Plan to dig clams and shuck oysters....The best seafood ever!

Permalink | Comments

Vacation on Hood Canal

Summer is in full swing around here. Meaning that we are experiencing many DOT delays. The department of transportation is making life a little stressed these days by having so many projects in just a short amount of miles going on at one time. It took me 50 minutes to go 11 miles the other day. So put on your patience cap when driving on Highway 101.

That is the extent of the stress around here. Although lately just figuring out what time to go pull your crab pot seems to be the next big stress. But once again patience pays off with some fantastic size crab! Very good eating too!

Our rentals are full for the most part. We have a new house up for rent so that will help out. All our visitors seem to enjoy the great seafood and beaches.

So if you haven't been here yet, nows a great time to see it all.

Permalink | Comments

Low Tides on Hood Canal.....

Since ShrimpFest the town has been bustling with activity. The very low tides have brought out all shellfish enthusiasts. People are getting nice size geoduck along with clams and oysters. July 4th weekend will be another round of low tides so come join us. Rent a place or camp at the many campgrounds open in the Brinnon area. We also have a couple of RV parks and a new one on the Dosewallips River.

We have a little bit of road construction going on near Dosewallips State Park. The state is putting in a new bridge and have installed a stop light. So now we can say we have a stop light in Brinnon. What is this world coming to. Don't be impatient though, speeding through there will net you a hefty fine. Slow down to 25 mph speed limit. It will only take you a few minutes to get through.

Lastly, July 4th weekend is full at our vacation houses. I'm excited when I get calls asking me how to dig an oyster. That means we'll have lots of new folks learning how to handle the shellfish. Once you try it you will be coming back for more.

Weather is rainy, misty and some days this past week down right wintery. At least I don't have to water my garden.

Permalink | Comments

Low tides mean great fresh Oysters!

My favorite seafood has got to be the Oyster. Lately they have been so plump and cold that I could eat them every day. Clams are also one of our best kept secrets here on the canal. We get to go shrimping on May 3 so we'll be eating those Hood Canal Spotted shrimp. I can't wait!!!

Join us on the canal for all this great seafood. Weather has been sun breaks and rain. Which means there is enough time in between showers to gather our oysters. Yum...................

Permalink | Comments

Another beautiful weekend in paradise

It's Friday again and all weather reports indicate another beautiful weekend. Folks are starting to get out of the city and drive to our wonderful and unique corner of the world. Our office is located just off Highway 101 in Brinnon so we know when the traffic is picking up.

The committee working on Shrimpfest says it's full steam ahead. So plan your Memorial day trip to Hood Canal soon. It's an easy drive from Seattle by taking the Edmonds Kingston ferry or the Bainbridge Island boat. Either way you cross over the Hood Canal bridge then south on Highway 101 into Brinnon.

The fisherman tell me the fish are biting. You know fisherman. I get to find out tonight by trying some of that fresh Blackmouth Hood Canal Salmon. Yummmmm........ PS, Last weekend I had fresh Hood Canal oysters.
